Sustainable goat(barbari) farming in Bihar
The simple purpose of goat farming is selling goats and their milk. In the goat farming business, certainly. you will not earn any profit for the initial first year of business.
If you make goat farm sustainable, then you can get extra benefits from it for the entire year.
How can we make a goat farm sustainable?
In the animal farming business, one thing is certain in dairy farming, poultry farming, and goat farming you can get dung from the farm on daily basis. This animal dung uses to make cow dung manure and poultry manure.
In goat farming, we can make goat poop manure as well. This is highly fertile and works as organic fertilizer for the crops. We can also use this to grow fodder for the goats. Hence, we can follow the cycle of sustainability in goat farming.
Goat farming(20+1 barbari) project report in Bihar
In Bihar, it is seen that most of the goat breeds can't survive throughout the year. This is the result of shutting down many goat farming start-ups. People randomly select goat breeds for their farms and then face the issues of goat survival.
Barbari goats can adjust to both winters and summers of Bihar easily.
Following is project report on 20+1 barbari goat farming sustainable business in Bihar-
Requirements to make a (20+1) barbari goat farm
We included all the basic requirements for goat farming here with proper measurement-
Housing and shelter for goats
It is always good to have bricks and cement walls housing goat farming for a longer period. On average, each goat needs a 1.5x0.8 square meter area maximum to sleep. For 20 goats, we need a 30x16 square meter area. After including galleries for walking in and out, it will become a 35x20 square meter area.
You can add thick wooden beds to sit for goats in winters. The size of each wooden bed is according to the maximum size of the goats.
Electricity connection
You need a proper electricity connection inside the housing shelter of goats. During the delivery, you need proper lighting inside the shed. To handle any problem with goats at night, you need a proper electricity connection.
This includes a few led bulbs and exhaust fans in summer. In winters, you can use either an air blower for a few hours or you can use the dry bush for their sitting.
Goat breed buying
As we mentioned above, most of the goat breeds can't survive in the Bihar region, so you have very limited options there with goat farming.
Barbari goat is one of the most popular and ideal breeds in Bihar. During the selection of breed, you have to be aware of mixed breed and pure breed. Sometimes, mixed barbari breeds can't handle the climate because of the non-environment-friendly hybridization of goats.
Select the cross barbari breeds that are hybrid with your local goat.
There are chances that you have to order the barbari goat from outside Bihar. So keep these things in mind and cross-check the details of the breed before buying.
Selection of male goat
Male goat breed selection is a very important factor in the goat farming business in Bihar. If it is going to be a cross breeder with barbari goat, then he has to be either a local goat of Bihar or he should handle the climate of Bihar.
In the case of odd male goats, your upcoming hybrid goats may feel uncomfortable in the Bihar climate throughout the year. It is possible that they won't survive in the future and may shut your business down.
If the male goat is of the same breed then it will be helpful for you.
Feeding of goats
It is good to have super Napier grass for goats. It is cheaper and easy to grow for longer periods.
For good growth, it is important to provide them with both green and dry fodder. In green fodder, you can provide them with super Napier grass and green leaves. In dry fodder, you can use crushed wheat straws, wheat water mixture, and minerals.
In a day, a young goat eats 7 to 10% of its overall body weight. It means a young barbari goat eats 2 to 2.5 kg of a mixture of green and dry fodder daily.
Freshwater tank
You need to add a freshwater tank either inside or outside of your goat shelter. Always provide your goats with fresh drinking water. It will be good if you take a direct connection to the government water pipeline. Otherwise, you can dig handpumps near your goat farm.
You can buy a plastic tank to collect water for some time from the market.
Process of using goat poop for goat manure
To make goat farming sustainable, you need to work in the following steps-
Collection of goat poop
You can scatter a thin layer of sand at the place of their sitting. In summers, it is not mandatory because it can get hot and uncomfortable for goats.
In summers, goat poop gets dry fast and is easy to collect. In winters, you can scatter a thin layer of sand. Take a filtration tool and filter the poop and sand easily.
Collect the fresh poop on the daily basis.
Crushing of goat poop
Now, you can either use dried poop to make manure or you can crush that before. It is needed that crushed poop decomposed faster than dried goat poop.
Use a heavy tool to create pressure and crush the goat poop.
Mixing goat poop with other organic matter
You can add multiple organic materials to make goat manure. But you have to be aware of the ratio of goat poop and organic materials. 7:3 is ideal for goat poop and organic materials like dry leaves and organic waste.
Mix them well and spray water during the mixing process.
Let the collection decompose for at least 3 months. Although it gives the best results after decomposing in black manure you can use it from the 4th month.
It is highly fertile for many crops. You can either use it in your gardens or to grow vegetables in fields.
