In almost every rural area, people use direct water supply either from the groundwater or they depend on seasonal rain. Irrigation is becoming a bigger problem because most of the groundwater is already used. Even in those areas where plenty of water availability, people use unnecessary extra water in irrigation because of no precision and measurement.
Sprinkler irrigation is one of those few irrigation techniques that help to use water precisely. It can save up to 40% of the water we generally use in irrigation.
Let's understand what is the overall estimated cost of sprinklers in one acre area.
Sprinkler irrigation system cost per acre
What is a sprinkler irrigation system?
Sprinkler irrigation systems use to sprinkle irrigation water as natural rain. These sprinklers break the flowing water into drops and these drops fall like rain from the sprinklers. All the sprinklers fix on a height and connect with the main water pumping source.
This source creates pressure on the water supply, thus we create rain through the sprinklers. These sprinklers cover small but a circular area of agricultural land.
Before getting the setup cost of sprinkler irrigation, we want to highlight the requirements you need to install the sprinkler irrigation system.
Requirements for sprinkler irrigation system per acre
Following are the basic and essential requirements to install an irrigation system on agricultural land of one-acre
Water supply system
Water supply is one of the main sections of the sprinkler system. It consists of the following-
- A water tank or groundwater supply
To supply water for sprinklers, we need either a water source-connected water tank at a height to create pressure or we need to use direct groundwater as source water.
In both cases, the rest of the connectivity system is the same. In the water tank, we connect it with a water source line and connect it with a control valve. To pump out groundwater, we use tubewell, submersible, ground pumps, etc.
- Control valve
Control valve control and operate the water flow from the source of water. You can't use a local material control valve. It is important to make sure that the control valve is made of quality material and can control heavy water pressure.
It makes things easy to on and off the water pressure when it is needed.
- Motor pump
The electric motor pumps out the water from the ground and connects it with the control valve through PVC pipes. The power of the motor pump decides the pressure of water through the sprinkler system.
For one acre of land, you can use a 2 HP water pump direct from the source.
- Pressure gauge
The pressure gauge is important to check the actual pressure of water from the source. It can help to detect the fault in motor health and to make any change in the supply system.
- Water filter
Next after the control valve, we connect a water filter to filter the sand particles, impurities particles, and dust from the water. Another end of the filter is connected with ARB with the help of PVC pipes. These filters are easily available in the markets.
Sprinkler system in one acre
Considering a one-acre(4046 sqm) area in the measurement of 80x50 square meters. Let's understand the inner structure net of supply pipelines.
Supply pipeline
Considering the land rectangular, you can divide the main pipeline to maintain pressure in all the sprinklers.
Suppose we divided one-acre land into four areas of 20x50 each. So the main pipeline covers the perimeter of this rectangular.
For this, we need 4 inches of PVC pipes with PVC elbows. To cover one-acre land with the above measurement, we need 250 meters of PVC pipes.
Lateral pipe
We use polytube as a lateral pipe to connect sprinklers with the main pipeline. We make nozzle holes and connect.
In one acre area, we need 800 meters of polytube lateral pipe.
Sprinklers head
The sprinkler's heads are similar to artificial rain guns. These are available in both plastic and metals.
One sprinkler has the potential to cover a circular area with a radius of 2.5 meters. It means one sprinkler covers an area in 5 diameter range.
Hence, one sprinkler covers a 19.6 square meter area. So, to cover a one-acre area, we need 160 to 180 sprinklers.
Gate valves
Gate valves are connected with the outlined water supply pipes. It controls the water regulation throughout the agricultural area. Here, we divided one-acre land into four sections, so we need four gate valves.
Sprinkler irrigation system cost per acre
- Water tank cost- 8,000 INR
- Motor pump cost- 8,000 INR
- Pressure gauge- 800 INR
- Control valve- 5,000 INR
- Water filter- 2,000 INR
- ARB- 1,500 INR
- Supply pipeline- 5,000 INR
- Lateral pipe- 9,000 INR
- Sprinklers head- 8,000 INR
- Gate valves- 2,000 INR(4 pieces)
- Other small spends- 5,000 INR
- Labor cost- 7,000 INR
Total cost- 61,300 INR
So, overall cost from water supply system to sprinkler irrigation system installation is 61,300 INR per acre.
Maintenance of sprinkler irrigation system
- Main supply line maintenance
It is possible during plowing that tractors may break the PVC pipes. It will create a problem for the water supply.
It is easy to repair PVC Pipes even after breaking from mid-portion. First, turn off the gate valve and control valve. Just cut a few inches extra at both ends. Use a PVC socket to bind them with the help of PVC glue.
- Lateral pipe maintenance
In winters, lateral pipes may break and leak water. To recover it, you can use a polytube socket to repair it.
Cut the broken section and bind them with the help of PVC glue and socket.
But remember to turn off the gate valve.
- Sprinkler heads
In longer goals, you need to change the sprinkler heads as they work for a limited period.
Keep the gate valve off and change the sprinkler heads easily.
- Gate valves maintenance
If you find that the gate valve is not working properly or is free to move by itself, you need to change it.
Turn off the main control valve and change it with a new gate valve.
Advantages of sprinkler irrigation system
Following are some of the major advantages of sprinkler irrigation systems-
- Sprinkler irrigation systems are helpful to save water from over-irrigation wastage. It can save water up to 45%.
- We can increase the productivity of our crops through sprinkler irrigation. We use it precisely for each plant in a plenty amount of irrigation water.
- It is easy to operate sprinkler irrigation for everyone. But before that, you need to understand the control valves.
- As an advantage, sprinkler irrigation help to move towards modern agricultural techniques for rural and small farmers.
