In September, cold climate lawn grasses enter in cooler months than their recent one. September month is ideal for the peak growth of cold season grasses. Following are the requirements for cold season lawn grasses during September- 

  • Weeding is the first requirement in process of lawn renovation or lawn treatment. Weed appearance is very common on every lawn but even after treatment, weeds appear once again sometimes. Weed creates new problems for lawns especially related to fundamental growth. 
  • During September, overheight of grass creates problems regarding sunlight access in the roots of the turf. To get full growth and start treatment, mowing is a very important need. Most of the time, we keep mowing till the height of 1.5 to 2 inches of lawn grass. 
  • Till September, the cold season lawn grasses faced dynamics in temperature that's why some of the spots are dormant or dried. From here, it is a better time to encourage such grasses to get their peak in the upcoming weeks. So overseeding is a must to encourage cold season crops to get thick and healthy growth.  
  • These grasses ask for whole fertilization in these weeks. To overcome low fertility, better growth, thick turf, and healthy grass, fertilization is very important in September.

On the other hand, hot climate lawn grasses start to get dormant because of temperature down. 

Following are the requirements to get in better conditions for hot season lawn grasses- 

  • In dormancy, warm season lawn turf needs overseeding to recover for the upcoming winter. Overseeding increases the chances of greener turf in the upcoming winter.
  • Like cold season lawn trees and shrubs, warm climate trees and shrubs left their leaves in fall. These leaves work as mulching on the lawn turf, so clean them as soon as possible. Otherwise, it will keep your lawn dormant or maybe your lawn may get fungus or moss. 
  • Before the end of the fall, your lawn asks for cleaning of weeds as soon as possible in starting of September. If you don't clean them, they will get dry and will make ugly brown spots on the green turf in winter. They also affect badly the growth of their neighbor turfs.

So mow your lawn turf above 1.5 inches from the turf.

  • Lawn aeration

Aerate your lawn in the first week of September. It will release the soil stress and increase the absorbing capacity of lawn turf. 

  • Lawn turf fertilization 

After aeration in the first week, now you can fertilize your lawn. Use organic fertilizers or (>80%) decomposed compost.

Spread it in the most badly affected areas and the rest of the lawn. 

  • Soil scratching and Overseeding 

After soil fertilization, you can overseed your lawn. Use a long-handle scratching tool and scratch the soil to make space for seeds. Spread seeds(extra) in all the least thick areas and spread seeds too with decreased density in the rest of the lawn. 

After final fertilization, keep your lawn moisture maintain and irrigate regularly. In full sunlight, 1.5 irrigation is enough for better growth.

  • Don't aerate your lawn turf in September or fall because it is the time when grass enters dormancy after summer. 
  • Don't fertilize your lawn turf in September. It is not required to fertilize the lawn when it gets dormant in September. 
  • Don't use your lawn sprinklers to spray water over the requirement. It is best to not over-irrigate the lawn when it starts changing states(from green to dormancy).
  • Don't set the mowing machine too deep(less than 1 inch) otherwise, you may lose your lawn grass after the dormancy period. 

Tips to follow in September

You can't follow all the lawn care processes in September. It is important to be aware and careful during this period because of lawn turf sensitivity. 

Following are some tips to follow to care lawn in September-

  • Clean all the weeds carefully and root out every single weed by using the hand-picking method. Use of regular liquid weed spray takes too long better to use your hands to pick weeds from roots(Wear safety gloves).
  • Overseed your lawn in empty spots and all the spots to replace weeds with turf. 
  • Reduce the irrigation timings and irrigate your lawn often not regularly. 
  • Clean every dry leaf and dry shrub from the lawn turf regularly. You don't need to keep them as mulching.
