August is a very crucial month for lawn grass in the USA. This month, lawn grass faces variations in temperature from hot to moderate. Even if you did mistakes in recent months, then you still have a chance to make your lawn conditions better. Sometimes, people do mistakes or are unable to manage the timings of weeding, aeration, and fertilization.

To recover and care for lawn grass in August, you should follow the basic practices of lawn care properly. But your approach to practicing should be quite scientific and practical. You can't behave the same with all the lawn grass varieties. They all are different but in the same climate native lawn grasses, you can behave almost the same.

  • 1st week- Hot
  • 2nd week- Hot

Tools required

Your tools should be comfortable with an easy mechanism for lawn care practices.

  • Aeration tool

In small lawns, long-handle aeration tools are pretty good. They work well and are easy to port from one place to other. Such tools don't cover big spaces and are easy to work with for a longer period. On bigger lawns, you can arrange aeration machines to aerate your lawn. 

  • Mowing machine

For mowing lawn grass, you must have either an automatic or manual mowing machine. 

  • Fertilizer spreader

The fertilizer spreader machine spread the fertilizers equally and specifically in required areas. You can fertilize your lawn manually too but use a  PPE kit. 

  • Grass scratching tool 

Grass scratching recks are very useful in lawns. At the time of recovering lawn grass from weeds, scratching reck is very useful.

Fertilizers 

Compost(>90% decomposed) can be a very good option as lawn grass fertilizer in August. Fresh organic waste compost may burn the lawn grass.

Weed removals

Scott's turf builder weed & feed',  'Southern Ag amine 2(4-D)', and 'Drive XLR8' are some good lawn weed removals that you can use on your lawn. 

In smaller lawns, you can remove weeds by hand picking easily. It is not as intense as it seems. But be aware to remove weeds directly with their roots. 

PPE kit

PPE kit saves your eyes, nose, ears, hairs, and skin from the chemicals you use on your lawn. It includes eyeglasses, gloves, ear plugs, masks, and hair cover. 

Steps of Lawn grass care in August

Following are the tips according to the weather of August so you can care for your lawn grass accordingly-

  • Weeding in August

If your lawn is full of weeds, then you should start weeding from the first week of August. Clean all the weeds in this period so that you can process further to recover lawn grass. 

If you find any weeds appearing lawn till the last week of August again, you should remove all the weeds again. 

  • Aeration in August

After cleaning weeds, you should start lawn grass recovering. For that, first, you need to aerate empty weed spots with the help of aeration tools. Also, in thin grass spots, or dry spots, you should keep aeration till the 8th day of the month. Also, don't forget to use the scratching tool on empty and dry spots.

  • Fertilization in August

Use decomposed organic fertilizers or natural liquid fertilizers on your lawn after aeration. You can use moderate intense fertilizers for the first 10 days of the month. After 3rd week, the temperature takes a variation from hot to moderate. You shouldn't use intense fertilizers in the last week of August.

Spread the compost gently in the dry spots or weeding spots. Use sprayers for liquid fertilizers to even fertilization. 

  • Overseeding in August

Now, overseed your lawn in recovery spots. Just spread the ready areas and spray some water on them. Just a few hours after the aeration, you can overseed your lawn. The best time to overseed a lawn is the morning period. 

  • Lawn grass mowing in August 

Mowing is a very important factor in a healthy lawn. In August, you should mow your lawn before fertilization. Once, you are ready to fertilize your lawn, you can't mow it for the next 20 days. 

If there are fewer spots of weeds on your lawn, then you can mark them and continue to mow the rest of the lawn. 

  • Irrigation in August

Keep your irrigation regular during the first two weeks on the daily basis. If your lawn seems dry in the last two weeks then you can repeat the regular irrigation otherwise keep it once in two days.
